Debunking 5 Coffee Myths

by Kenneth Reed on May 06, 2021
Coffee is a drink that has been around for centuries. It’s an important cultural symbol in many countries, and modern coffee shops have helped customize it to satisfy diverse palates. But there are also myths associated with this dark beverage. Here we debunk some common myths related to coffee:

Coffee Helps Lose Weight

This is a widespread myth that holds no truth. Researchers have found no links between coffee and weight loss. Coffee can increase your metabolism for a while and suppress your appetite, so you don’t feel hungry, but this is only momentarily. Coffee shouldn’t be used as a weight-loss supplement.

It Has An Insomnia Inducing Quality

Some people are more prone to the caffeine present in coffee. The myth is that having a cup of coffee in the afternoon can disrupt your night’s sleep schedule by causing insomnia. However, this isn’t true as more than half of the coffee you ingest is flushed out of your bloodstream within 7 hours. This gives you plenty of time to enjoy that afternoon cup with ease.

It’s Highly Addictive

Coffee is also widely known to be highly addictive. Most avid coffee drinkers claim they wouldn’t be able to function without it. Caffeine directly affects the nervous system, and while it may energize you, you’re not likely to get addicted to it.

It Has A Better Taste When Made With Boiled Water

Using boiled water on the coffee grind or beans will not give you better-tasting coffee, as some people believe. If the temperature of the water is more than 200 degrees Fahrenheit, it will extract the bitter oils present and make your coffee taste bitter in return. To prevent this from happening, you should use warm water, never boiled. The ideal temperature should be between 170 to 190 degrees Fahrenheit.

Coffee Causes Heart Diseases

Coffee can’t possibly cause heart diseases. People who have health issues such as heart diseases should control their consumption of coffee as it can slightly raise blood pressure, but the coffee itself can’t cause these diseases. In fact, a study has found that people who drank coffee regularly were at a decreased risk of heart diseases later on.

Coffee isn’t a harmful drink and is certainly not as bad as the myths have made it out to be. Learning more about coffee can help dispel these common myths.
